Elizabeth Taylor was born in London in 1932 to American parents who were art dealers. They relocated to Los Angeles after the start of World War II. She first appeared on the silver screen in the 1942 film There's One Born Every Minute at the age of 10; she became a household name at age 12 with 1944's National Velvet.
Taylor was renowned not only for her exquisite taste in jewellery but for her compelling love affairs. These two things became intertwined throughout her eight marriages. Through these marriages she was gifted several of her treasures including a diamond decorated tiara, a set of ruby and diamond earrings and matching necklace by Cartier and a Bvlgari emerald and diamond brooch to name a few.
Upon her death, she wished her collection of nearly 250 pieces of jewellery to be auctioned. And, in New York in December of 2011, her beloved possessions were offered up to a highly anticipated specialised auction through Christie’s. Her prised possessions raised over £140 million for charity.
