Stanhope A. Forbes RA

Stanhope Alexander Forbes (1857-1947) was an artist and founding member of the Newlyn school of painters. He studied first at Dulwich College under John Sparks, moved onto Lambeth School of Art and then attended the Royal Academy. The artist moved to France in 1881 with fellow painter Henry Herbert La Thangue and it was there he found his style, heavily influenced by Jules Bastien-Lepage. He used the en plein air technique throughout his career and focused mainly on landscapes and genre scenes.

On his return to London he exhibited at the Royal Academy (1883) and the Royal Hibernian Academy (1884). Soon after, he moved to Newlyn in Cornwall where he and his wife founded the Newlyn Art School (1899). He was elected a Royal Academian in 1910 and then made a Senior Royal Academian in 1993.
