There is a sense in some of Noel Murphy's recent paintings that we are seeing these works at a certain selected moment in their evolution. Another day in the studio might lead to a canvas being changed beyond recognition or even painted over entirely. They have no planned end point and the moment at which the artist stops is a matter of instinct and experience.

The world of Murphy's painting is vulnerable to the act of mark-making, or to the intrusion of a new thought or memory to overlap or cover over an already existing element within a painting. At times the image seems to disappear as we look at it, eroded by deliberately obtrusive marks and short brushstrokes that dig at the surface and undermine the sense of illusion. A variety of images and sources can seem to occur within the same painting, in some cases suggesting the tension between public and private worlds, history and recollection, or the diverse influences that jostle for space within the painter's interior world.

Artistic influences are central to many of these works, a lengthy historical trail from Ribera and Velazquez, through Walter Sickert to Ben Nicholson. Nicholson is particularly relevant here in terms of the manner in which his Cubist-influenced works of the 1930s provide only the most reluctant and minimal clues to the idea or motif from which they are drawn, eliminating and abstracting everything else. Only the essentials of text or image remain as indicators, much as the numbers Murphy occasionally uses in these paintings seem to indicate the artist mapping his own life in his paintings.

Murphy's insistent appropriation of imagery from other artists or from photographic sources runs in parallel to the manner in which he excavates from his own personal life and history. It is impossible for an artist as deeply involved with the art of the past as Noel Murphy not to connect and equate an experience of art with an experience of life. His engagement with the world occurs through art, both that he looks at and that which he has previously made himself, as much as it occurs through the experience of his own life, and these multi-layered paintings reflect this.

Figures from Murphy's own family life overlap with figures from paintings or imagined figures or groups in places whose physical reality seems always to be slipping, to suggest that there is no single, simple experience of a moment, no definitive interpretation or memory of a particular event or moment and that this elusiveness is what makes painting a uniquely complex response to the individual experience within the world and ultimately an activity through which these elements can all be brought together.

First Time Buyers
If you have not bought through a Ross's Online Auction before please read the following guide. Our Conditions of Sale may be accessed at any point and should be read in conjunction with this short guide.

What is an Online Auction?
An online auction closely resembles a live auciton but without an auctioneer. It is an automated online-only auction which takes place on our website www.rosss.com. Each auction typically spans a one or two week period and will have a designated end time. You can place a bid on your desired lots throughout this period. On the final day of the auction each lot will close consecutively from the designated end time and any bids placed in the final 30 seconds will extend the time to allow other bidders an opportunity to return with a bid.

Registration
To bid on a lot you must register a MY ROSS'S account and login. Once logged in you are ready to place bids online at anytime up until the end time of each lot. If your bid is accepted, you will be notified that you are the current highest bidder. If you are outbid you will be notified by email and have the option to bid again and if you win a lot you will receive an invoice by email after the auction's completion.

Maximum Bid
You may leave a maximum bid which will instruct the computer to bid on your behalf only as much as required for you to remain the highest bidder up until your limit. This means that you may win an item for less than your maximum bid, however you can also be outbid if someone enters a higher maximum bid. If you are outbid you will receive an outbid notification by email. Please note: Only you will know what your maximum bid is. If you enter a maximum bid amount that matches that of another bidder, precedence will be given to the bidder who placed the bid of that amount first and you will be asked to bid again.

Bidding Increments
Bidding increments vary depending on the auction. Bids are received in both GBP and EUR and, accordingly, increments may differ if a bid is received in EUR.

Specialist Auctions (Jewellery & Watches, Irish Paintings, Antiques & Furniture, Whiskey & Fine Wine) increments will be as follows:
£0-£50 by £5
£50-£500 by £10
£500-£1000 by £20
£1000-£5000 by £50
£5,000-£10,000 by £100
£10,000-£50,000 by £200
£50,000+ by £500

The Basement Auction increments will be as follows:

£30-£50 by £5
£50-£200 by £10
£200+ by £20

Anti-Snipe Feature
In designing this website, Ross's have employed over one hundred years' auctioneering experience to replicate events as closely as possible as they occur in the saleroom. If a bid is placed in the final 30 seconds of the auction, the lot's end time will be extended back up to 30 seconds. This feature ensures that underbidders have a fair opportunity to respond to the bidding.

Viewing
Lots are on view in our Montgomery Street Saleroom throughout the auction. Please always check the viewing times on the catalogue. The images on the website are as accurate reproductions as is practicable and can be relied upon as such. Ross's are pleased to offer a condition report on any lot upon request. Purchasers must satisfy themselves as to the condition and nature of any lot and if in doubt are advised to view the sale in person.

Buyer's Premium
The buyer shall pay the auctioneer a Buyer's Premium of 25% of the auction price. VAT is payable on the commission at the prevailing rate.

Artist's Resale Rights
Purchase of lots marked with the symbol * only will be subject to payment of a levy for Artist's Resale Rights. Royalties will be calculated at 4% of the hammer price. (Please note: This can be seen at the bottom right of each lot's page). Artist resale rights are applicable for any works that sell for £1,000 or more and are by a living artist or by an artist who is deceased for less than 70 years. The levy is reduced to 3% between £50,000 and £200,000.
