Tanzanite Tanzanite was only discovered in the 1960s and is therefore a fairly new gemstone. This gemstone is only found in one place - the Merelani Hills of Tanzania, making it more commercially rare than diamond.  

Tanzanite is a variety of zoisite and is particularly prized for its plethora of blue and purple shades; this is further enhanced by its pleochroism i.e. its ability to display different colours when tilted. Tanzanite has become a very popular gemstone, not only for its exclusivity but also because it exhibits the beauty of a sapphire but with more variation.
