Jade Jade is the term used for two different types of gems; nephrite and jadeite, both of which are regarded as authentic jade. The term jade comes from the Spanish 'piedra de idaja' i.e. loin stone as it was believed to help with kidney issues. In referring to jade the French only used the latter half of the Spanish resulting in l'ejade and therefore the next natural step in English was the name jade.

Jade is hard and often has veins or blemishes running throughout, however, these are not detrimental to the value of pieces but are often accepted as part of the gemstone's character. Whilst jade is most associated with a green colour, it is also available in white, yellow and red.
