Engagement & Wedding Rings It is believed that what we are familiar with as an 'engagement ring' dates back to 1477 with the first ever recording of a diamond betrothal, when Archduke Maximillian of Austria proposed to Mary of Burgundy with a ring set with diamond chips in the shape of an 'M'. This was the start of a successful, however, short-lived marriage with Mary dying at the age of 25 from a horse-riding accident.

At the turn of the 19th Century ring used in betrothal were similar to what we know today i.e. a ring set with a precious stone, thanks to a large marketing campaign entitled, 'Diamonds Are Forever' by De Beers in the middle of the 20th Century. From this, diamond rings have been the most common way to signify ones engagement.

From the classic diamond solitaire ring to diamond three stone rings and cluster, today there is no such thing as a 'typical' engagement ring. In recent years coloured stones have experienced a resurgence in popularity, with thanks, in part to the Duchess of Cambridge's stunning engagement ring.
