Ross’s frequently offer interesting lots in their online art auctions and this month they have a particularly notable piece for sale: a Charles McAuley painting presented to home-grown superstar golfer Fred Daly by the members of Cushendall Golf Club.
The piece, entitled ‘Fishing Boats, Cushendall’, was given to
the late Daly in celebration of his famous win at The Open Championship in
Liverpool Golf Club, Hoylake in 1947. Significantly, Daly was the first
Irishman to win The Open and it took sixty years before another Ulsterman would
replicate this success with Darren Clarke winning The Open in 2011.
The Portrush man was also British Matchplay Champion three
times in addition to being only one of two men in the 20th Century
to do the double and win both The Open and The Matchplay in the same year.
As one of Northern Ireland’s revered sportsmen, items
associated with Daly secure strong interest and prices alike. This Charles
McAuley painting, aside from being painted by another treasured local talent,
is anticipated to see some very competitive bidding and with an estimate of
£1,250 to £1,500, this lot is sure to sell.
