Sean McSweeney HRHA

Born in Dublin in 1935, leading Irish painter Sean McSweeney was self-taught and had a fondness for painting the Sligo coastline. His interest in art began with his father who was an artist and was fostered by visiting the Hugh Lane Gallery, located close to his family home.
A member of Aosdana, he started exhibiting regularly in the 1960s in the Irish Exhibition of Living Art and the Oireachtas. He has also showed work with the Taylor Galleries in Dublin, the Dawson Gallery in Dublin and a retrospective was held in his honour by the Galway Arts Festival.
McSweeny was the recipient of several prestigious awards including the Oireachtas Award (1968), the George Campbell Travelling Award (1980), the Carroll Award and a Medal for the Claremorris Open Exhibition (1987-8).
