Rose Brigid Ganly HRHA

Rose Brigid Ganly (1909-2002) was an accomplished sculptor and painter born in Limerick and raised in Fitzwilliam Square, Dublin. She attended the Metropolitan School of Art in 1925, studying painting under Sean Keating and Patrick Tuohy, and sculpture under Oliver Sheppard. She held her first exhibit with the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) and was made an associate member soon after (1928). Her first solo show was held in the Dublin Painters Gallery (1935) and she was subsequently made a full member of the RHA.

In 1965 Ganly resigned from the RHA due to conflicting attitudes over the modern school of painting and in 1972 she was made an honorary member. Some of her other accomplishments include representing Ireland in an Exhibition of Contemporary Irish Painting and being awarded the California Gold Medal (1929). The Gorry Gallery, Dublin and the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery held retrospective exhibitions of her work.
