Artist Bio

Oisín Roche has built a considerable reputation for himself in the past ten years. He has received a variety of commissions, prizes and travel bursaries. In 2008 his portrait of journalist John Waters was selected for exhibition at the BP portrait exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery of London and has exhibited with the Medici Gallery Cork Street London.  He was awarded an RHA gold medal for painting in 1996, and collected prizes in 2007 and 2009 from the Watercolour Society of Ireland.  He is equally proficient in landscape, portraiture and still life. And while his urban streetscapes are both energetic and tranquil – reflective of a Post-Impressionist European exuberance, his excercises in still life have a clarity reminiscent of the Dutch and Flemish masters. His portraits, particularly those of friends and acquaintances, recall the spirit of French intimism at its most engaging.

He recently received the Ireland US Council / Irish arts review award for outstanding portraiture, and has had several exhibitions of his paintings at home and abroad , the last being a major show with Adams Auctioneers Dublin , his second with this famous Auctioneers.

Oisin works directly from nature and has developed a strong draughtsmanship drawing ability as well as a painterly approach to his subjects, all from the study of the great traditions of painting in Europe.
