Norman Garstin
Artist Bio
Norman Garstin (1847-1926) was a landscape and figure painter born in Co Limerick and grew up with his grandparents and then guardians. Due to health reasons, in 1858 he was sent to the Channel Islands and on holidays back to Ireland, he spent much of his time painting. A professor advised him to study architecture so he then moved to London to work in an architect’s office.
Garstin first exhibited in the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1883, contributing a total of thirty-four pictures over the course of his career. He later exhibited his work in the Fine Art Society in London, Normandy, Brittany, Holland and the Walker Galleries.
The Times said, ‘he was a man of general artistic and intellectual ability rather than a powerful artist, though his work, in several mediums, was remarkable for sensitive feeling and decorative charm.’
