Artist Bio

Len Tabner was born in South Bank on the River Tees near Middlesbrough. His father was a merchant seaman. From 1970, he settled in a cottage at Teesside, on the highest cliff in England. In spite of the intense weather conditions, Tabner typically works en plein air, on beaches or aboard boats, which produces a sense of urgency and atmosphere in his depictions of the landscape. Working from the Falkland Islands to Japan, his skill lies in his ability to capture the weather and atmosphere of specific locales across the world.

After leaving school, Tabner completed a foundation course at Middlesbrough School of Art before transferring to Bath Academy of Art in 1965, where he met his future wife, the sculptor, Helen de Paravicini. He often choses subjects representing the challenges of nature with a particular interest in extreme weather. He has painted North Sea oil platforms and accompanied trips with the Royal Navy to the Falklands, South Georgia and the South Atlantic. In 1995, Tabner was commissioned to paint in Shirakawa in Japan. He painted in Ireland with Peter Prendergast and visited America, working in Oklahoma and Texas.

Tabner’s solo exhibitions have been held at Agnew’s Gallery, London and Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle. His work is included in the collections of the British Museum, Science Museum, Contemporary Art Society, Darlington Art Gallery, and Gifu Memorial Museum.
