Julius Olsson RA

Julius Olsson was a London born artist who, despite being self-taught, was involved in setting up the School of Landscape and Marine Painting in St. Ives, teaching alongside Louis Grier and Algernon Talmage. The artist was given the opportunity to paint naval ships in action, a subject he had great interest in, during the First World War when he served as a lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (RNVR). He married Edith Ellison, the daughter of an Irish horse breeder, in 1925 which saw him make several trips to Ireland to paint.
Olsson was made a member of the New English Art Club in 1891 and was elected a full member to the Royal Academy in 1920 where he exhibited regularly.
