Artist Bio

John Aiken was born in Belfast. He completed his studies in London at the Chelsea School of Art. Aiken’s practice is informed by military architecture and the aesthetics of geometry and rational construction. He held a Rome Scholarship in Sculpture at British School, Rome, and while teaching at the University of Ulster, he returned to the Rome School’s faculty. He has exhibited since the 1980s and completed large-scale sculptures and environmental works at locations including St Anne’s Square, Belfast, Newgate Bastion, Derry, University College Hospital, London and Paddington Central, London.

Aiken has lectured and been a visiting artist at universities internationally. In 2012, he was appointed as Chair Professor of Fine Arts and Director of the Academy of Visual Arts, HKBU, previously he held the Slade Chair of Fine Art and was Director of the UCL Slade School of Fine Art in London.
