Hughie O'Donoghue RA

Hughie O’Donoghue was born in 1953 in Manchester and studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University of London, gaining an MA. The artist was encouraged by his father to study history and literature and to frequent the Manchester City Art Gallery, this would have a great impact on his later career.
He also took influence from his mother’s Irish heritage, spending much of his youth at the Gaeltacht in County Mayo. He deals with the subjects of history, memory and myth and was Artist in Residence at the National Gallery in London (1984-85).
O’Donoghue has exhibited widely, including at the AIR Gallery in London, the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin and the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester. He received an Honorary Doctorate from the National University of Ireland and in 2013 designed a stained glass window for Westminster Abbey, marking the 60th anniversary of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
