Harry R. Douglas

Harry Douglas (1862-1934) was a portrait painter born in Edinburgh. In 1901, having studied under Sir Noel Paton, Harry moved to Belfast to earn a living as a professional portrait painter. It was here that he became the honorary secretary of the Belfast Art Society.

In 1927, the Dublin Art Monthly commented, “The fidelity of his painting, albeit that it is a photographic fidelity, every vein and bone stands out clearly defined”. Outside of Belfast exhibitions, Douglas exhibited very little showing only one work at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. However, he was interested in travelling and was even the author of the Ulster Tourist Development Association guide to sport in Ulster.
