Hans Iten RUA

Hans Iten (1874-1930) was a landscape and flower painter born in Zurich. He studied at the School of Art, St. Gall, Switzerland before working in Paris. In 1904, he moved to Belfast and became closely associated with the Belfast Art Society. He was elected the society’s president in 1906.

Iten was influenced particularly by the Irish landscape, with many of his works depicting scenes from Antrim and Cushendall. In 1908, his work was exhibited in the Royal Hibernian Academy and the Belfast Art Society. From 1908 until his death, Iten showed nearly 50 of his works at the RHA. In 1930, he was one of the first of nine academicians elected to the Ulster Academy of Arts, however he was not in good health and unfortunately died later that year while back in Switzerland.
