Artist Bio

Cecil King

Cecil King (1921-1986) was a self-taught Irish artist with an abstract-minimalist style of painting. Starting his career as a businessman, he held his first one-man show in 1959 and became a full-time artist in 1964. His earlier works are expressionist in character but eventually this progressed to the minimalist style he has become known for. King was a founding member of the Rosc exhibitions which allowed him to come in contact with figures such as Barnett Newman who would have a great influence on his artistry.

He exhibited across Europe throughout his life and his paintings are held in collections in several important Museums. The Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery in Dublin (1981) and the Irish Museum of Modern Art (2008) held retrospectives of his work.
