Artist Bio
Arthur Armstrong RHA was born on 12th January 1924 in Carrickfergus, County Antrim. He was the son of a house painter and attended Strandtown Primary School. He studied political science, then architecture at Queen's University, before leaving to study at Belfast College of Art. During this time, he became acquainted with Gerard Dillon, George Campbell, and Daniel O’Neill whilst in Belfast. In 1950, his work was first exhibited at the Grafton Gallery, Dublin, followed by further exhibitions in England, Spain, and the United States, as well as in Belfast and Dublin. From the 1950s onwards, Armstrong developed a more abstract style influenced by cubism, concerned with strong shapes, and constructing landscapes and still life compositions from blocks of colour.In 1962, Armstrong moved to Dublin, sharing a house with Dillon in Ranelagh, and started exhibiting at the Royal Hibernian Academy. In 1969 he designed stage sets, alongside George Campbell and Gerard Dillon, for the Seán O'Casey play, Juno and the Paycock, at the Abbey Theatre. In 1972, Armstrong became a member of the Royal Hibernian Academy. In 1981, he became a member of Aosdána, while a retrospective exhibition of his work from 1950 to 1980 was held by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
